This patient presented me with an upper tooth that had an existing mercury filling, a large fracture down the back, and new decay in the fractured area. This is typical for the older mercury fillings. They expand over time and wedge the tooth apart.
As it turned out the tooth had a really deep crack that we found under the filling. The patient was not experiencing any pain but if we had left the filling in the tooth longer the crack would have become deeper and the patient could have ended up with a root canal. As you can see in the final photo, the tooth was restored with a ceramic partial crown. It is now protected from further wedging and I believe we were able to stop the advancement of the crack. The result is beautiful.
