Periodontal (Gum) Diseases are infections of the tissues and bone that support your teeth. Periodontal diseases are caused by plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that constantly forms on the teeth. If bacterial plaque is not removed by daily brushing, flossing and regular dental cleanings, the gums can become infected and inflamed.
Signs of Gum Disesase:
- Gums that bleed easily
- Red, swollen or tender gums
- Gums that have pulled away from the teeth
- Pus between the teeth and gums
- Persistent bad breath or bad taste
- Permanent teeth that are loose or shifting
- Changes in the way your teeth fit together
- Changes in the fit of partial dentures
If any of these are a concern for you, be sure to discuss with your hygienist at your next checkup appointment. Treated early, gum disease can be managed. There is usually no pain in the initial stages of gum disease.
